What are some health benefits of apples?

Saturday, April 23rd, 2011

I’ve started having an apple (or more) a day, in part to keep the doctor away, but also because I finally found a place nearby that sells good apples fairly consistently. I was wondering what some of the health benefits are – I’ve heard that apples can help you run better, for one thing, and was wondering if that was true. Also I’ve been told they’re pretty high in fiber. What else are they good for? And which color of apples (red vs green) is better for you, from a health standpoint, or does it really matter?

We’re told that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but what exactly are the health benefits of apples? Here are ten reasons to heed the advice of that old proverb.

Bone Protection
French researchers found that a flavanoid called phloridzin that is found only in apples may protect post-menopausal women from osteoporosis and may also increase bone density. Boron, another ingredient in apples, also strengthens bones.

Asthma Help
One recent study shows that children with asthma who drank apple juice on a daily basis suffered from less wheezing than children who drank apple juice only once per month. Another study showed that children born to women who eat a lot of apples during pregnancy have lower rates of asthma than children whose mothers ate few apples.

Alzheimer’s Prevention
A study on mice at Cornell University found that the quercetin in apples may protect brain cells from the kind of free radical damage that may lead to Alzheimer’s disease.

Lower Cholesterol
The pectin in apples lowers LDL ("bad") cholesterol. People who eat two apples per day may lower their cholesterol by as much as 16 percent.

Lung Cancer Prevention
According to a study of 10,000 people, those who ate the most apples had a 50 percent lower risk of developing lung cancer. Researchers believe this is due to the high levels of the flavonoids quercetin and naringin in apples.

Breast Cancer Prevention
A Cornell University study found that rats who ate one apple per day reduced their risk of breast cancer by 17 percent. Rats fed three apples per day reduced their risk by 39 percent and those fed six apples per day reduced their risk by 44 percent.

Colon Cancer Prevention
One study found that rats fed an extract from apple skins had a 43 percent lower risk of colon cancer. Other research shows that the pectin in apples reduces the risk of colon cancer and helps maintain a healthy digestive tract.

Liver Cancer Prevention
Research found that rats fed an extract from apple skins had a 57 percent lower risk of liver cancer.

Diabetes Management
The pectin in apples supplies galacturonic acid to the body which lowers the body’s need for insulin and may help in the management of diabetes.

Weight Loss
A Brazilian study found that women who ate three apples or pears per day lost more weight while dieting than women who did not eat fruit while dieting.

What type of health insurance should I get if I am self employed?

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

Hello I am a healthy female in my early thirties and a non smoker. I need to find decent health insurance that you would get from a good employer. I am new to this and dont understand what I need to have covered for health insurance. I am looking for some good advice and any suggestions. Thank You
P.S- Is it usual that health insurance does not cover maternity?

Since the health reform act, insurance companies have pretty much stopped selling maternity coverage. When you CAN buy it, it’s about $300 a month extra, and most of the time you have to purchase it a full year becoming pregnant, for it to cover. So yes, it’s normal for maternity to NOT be covered, under an individual policy.

You’re not going to get the same kind of coverage that you would through an employer. On an individual policy, they can exclude coverage for stuff already wrong. If you ARE currently pregnant, you’re uninsurable on an individual plan until after the baby is born (just sayin’, because 95% of the women who mention interest in maternity coverage here, are ALREADY pregnant).

For good advice that’s valid in YOUR area, you should talk to a local agent near you. They’ll know what state you are in, and which deals are best – and they can help you balance coverage and cost to find what you can afford, and they’ll EXPLAIN how it all works. You won’t get that from an online website.

What affordable health insurence would you recommend for my uninsurenced 21 year old daughter?

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

She works full time but her employer charges an outrageous amount of money for health insurence. I know there are many many young people who don’t have health insurence, mostly because of the cost of high insurence premiums. But my daughter really needs it cause she has some health issues that will stay with her for a lifetime.

What are the difference between these Mental Health Professionals?

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

What is the difference between a Mental Health Clinical Social Worker, Mental Health Psychologist, and a Mental Health Physician? I know that schooling is probably different. Do any of them have the ability to prescribe? Also, is there a difference between Behavioral health and Mental health? If so what is it so I know what kind of Dr. I should go see. Thank you!!

A social worker has a master’s degree. A psychologist has a doctorate in psychology. A physician who specializes in mental health is a psychiatrist and, in addition to medical school, has several years of specialized training.

The prescribing ability depends on the state. In many cases, however, the social worker or psychologist refers the patient to a psychiatrist for prescriptions, if needed, but does therapy themselves. Social workers usually concentrate on how your problems affect your ability to function in society. (It varies a lot though). Generally they do more short term treatment focused on functioning. They are not usually ones to treat very serious mental illnesses. For more serious problems, a psychologist is more appropriate as they also focus on the mental processes. A psychiatrist is best if it’s a chemical disorder or the most serious of mental illnesses, such as severe depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia.

Cant’ advise you as to which you should see without knowing what problems you think you have.

What would a health inspector do if he finds mold in an apartment?

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

There is a health inspection for all apartments in my building tomorrow. We have a couple small (one maybe 18 inches long, varying in width half an inch to about three inches, the other just a maybe 2" x 2" patch in the other corner) patches of mold in our ceiling along the corners. It’s been there for a while, and spreads extremely slowly. As we’ve never noticed any smells or health problems, we’ve never taken action on it.

I’m just wondering, what course of action will likely be taken when the apartment manager and health inspector see it?

Can’t answer. Too vague. What kind of "mold"?

If it’s simple mildew, YOU will be asked to clean it up.

If it’s something else, like being caused by a leak, the landlord will be told to repair.

What do new health care reforms mean for future doctors?

Sunday, January 16th, 2011

I am a freshman in college and planning on going to medical school and becoming a surgeon. In your opinion, what do Obama’s new health care reforms and overall tendencies of health care in the U.S. mean for doctors? Will they be paid less? Will it be harder for doctors to have their own practices? How will it affect patients?

Well, doctors presently are beginning to stop taking medicare patients because obama care cut the pay for their services. You do know that the bill cut 500BILLION dollars out of the medicare system. It is something to watch, because we havent got there (single-payor) yet, but in the future, if it does become reality, the government will control how much you can charge, because they will be the ones paying you. The government will also control what procedures you will be able to perform and onto whom you do it. People looks at universal health care with rosey colored glasses and not reality

How do you get certified as a health teacher?

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

My mom is a teacher, and I think she would be a good health teacher since she already teaches Food and Nutrition, and several other classes. The school needs a health teacher and she already knows a lot about health, but what would it take to become certified as a health teacher for a teacher?
We live in Utah, any info will help.

it depends on your state’s department of education…they should have a website where you can check it out. in Missouri she would just have to take the Praxis for health education to be certified.

Is there a good health insurance for college students?

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

I am a sophomore in college and have not had health or dental insurance since I was a little girl. I can’t be on my mom’s insurance cause the price will sky rocket. I have a part time job so I don’t get health benefits at work. Is there some type of health insurance that has good coverage but also doesn’t cost too much since I don’t make too much?

In some states, there is no "health insurance that … doesn’t cost too much", period. In some states, all health insurance, for everyone, costs "too much".

In other states, there is health insurance for someone your age that does not cost too much. However, it is not specifically for college students; it is for anyone your age who lives there and meets the medical criteria, whether or not they are a college student.

Finally, some, but not all, colleges offer their own insurance, which may or may not "cost too much", depending on what that particular college offers.

There is good health insurance for college students who attend colleges with good health insurance or live in states with good health insurance. There is not good health insurance for college students who attend colleges without good health insurance and live in states without good health insurance.

Try asking this again with the name of the state where you live, the name of the college, and your age.
